Perusing the Staake’s

Speaking of literary oddities, The Washington Post‘s Style Invitational is holding a contest to see who can come up with the best titles and descriptions to go with five covers of “unpublishable” children’s books by artist Bob Staake. Apparently, he’s written and illustrated more than 40 titles for tots, the majority of which have been deemed simply too shocking for release. This information of course makes us want to inspect the books of Staake’s that have hit the shelves (most recently Trucks Go Pop!) more closely—possibly while playing “Louie Louie” backwards or with Dark Side of the Moon queued up to The Wizard of Oz in the background.
